"Kaffeezeit," May 27, 2016 - "Kaffeezeit" is an exploration of the emotional experience associated with the centuries-old tradition of German kaffeezeit. Beginning with Angela Schöpke's experience of her German grandmother's life story told over kaffee und kuchen during her early adulthood, the musical and choreographic collaboration dives into what happens psychologically as we take a break from our day to engage in a structured ritual of flavorful indulgence and caffeine. In what becomes a studied narrative of finding emotional freedom within a ritualized daily structure, the piece echoes narratives of woman’s story as she navigates pre and post-World War II Germany’s social and economic structures. The “Kaffeezeit” musical score by Warren Raiti draws strong inspiration from late afternoon daylight's beauty, nostalgia, and balance as it shifts to evening.
